A two-hour course for legal teams: classify matter information, check AI tools against your firm's approved list, and redact or pseudonymize client data before any AI use.
What you will be able to do
- Sort material before you decide anything: Place matter documents into privileged, confidential, identifying client data or general material, and treat a mixed document by its most restrictive category.
- Check the tool, not just its name: Compare a named AI tool, account type and tier against your firm's approved list, and read the terms on retention, training use, access and storage location.
- Strip out direct identifiers: Remove or replace names, record numbers, addresses, contact details and dates on a working copy, then check what is left for indirect identifiers.
- Pseudonymize without fooling yourself: Use consistent replacement labels, understand why pseudonymized data can still point to a client, and keep the key outside the AI environment.
- Leave a record your attorney can review: Write down what was removed or replaced, where the working copy is stored and where the key is kept, and hand it over before AI use.
- Respond when it has already happened: Follow your firm's reporting steps when material has gone into an unapproved tool, record the details, and know why deleting the chat is not enough.
